You can find your free face painting idea on the Internet. Start by keying in "face painting ideas" or "face painting designs" into the search engine and familiarize yourself with common themes if you are a beginner. You can also search specifically for images so that you can quickly scan over some visuals to save into your computer.

After researching on face painting designs, start searching for "face painting materials" or "face painting supplies." The purpose here is to find other possible materials you can use to enhance your face painting idea. For example, you may find that glitter or body jewelry can actually be used to make your idea even more creative.


Furthermore, you can find a free face painting idea in your local art and crafts store as well as in the library. Scan through some body art, face painting and coloring books. Going through stencil cutouts is also a good idea if you'd like to know basic and popular shapes to use on the face. Sometimes all you need is an outline and then you can decide on a color combination. One of the major points of face painting is that you can be as creative as you want with color, just as long as you incorporate the right techniques to prevent smudging. A face can be transformed in its entirety, into an animal, character or monster. Face painters often use stencils, which are painted and then stamped onto the face, and can be popular, too. Stencils and stamps are probably the easiest way for beginners to successfully do face painting. The stencils themselves can be cleaned with alcohol or wet wipes between paintings for sanitary reasons. A brush is then used to apply a new color or set of colors for the next child. Different colors can be used for separate parts of the stamp. For example, a butterfly can be outlined in blue and filled in with yellow. The stamp is then pressed against the person's cheek. This is a good way to get the lines just right each time.

Many people who do face painting will do everything with a paint brush. Whiskers, dog eyes, hearts, rainbows and Spider Man are all popular. For the 4th of July, a face could be painted completely with red, white and blue stars. For Easter, decorative eggs, bunny rabbits, flowers and baskets can all easily be painted onto the face. Try hearts for Valentine's Day, or a candy cane face with alternating red and white stripes for a wild, Christmas gathering. People will surprise face painters with creative requests, however. Be prepared to paint just about any character, emblem or color imaginable.

Halloween certainly boasts the biggest number of face painted ghouls, vampires, monsters and more. For the Hulk, one can simply paint their faces green. You can also use a simple Halloween theme, as well. Try bats, a spider web face, or an eerie yellowish tint for a witch's face. Zombies and ghouls can cast sunken features under their eyes and paint blood around their mouths. Of course, the characters don't have to be scary. It's not hard to paint a clown face, with a little patience for painting a giant mouth, or using a solid color to enhance a costume, such as a giant raisin, bear or anything else one can build or find a costume for. Many Halloween costumes will provide directions for adding face painting.

There are also plenty of kits in stores or on the web, which are geared for specific characters, or that come with all the colors for one's own creativity to come out. In general, these paints are a little thicker and harder to remove than the typical face paint used for your everyday festival or event.

Step 1
Lightly dampen a high density sponge and build up with Snazaroo White. Cover the entire face with a White base. Ensure the base is spread evenly with no streaks.

Step 2
For a more sallow complexion, add Snazaroo Pale Yellow to the forehead and cheek bone areas with a sponge.

Step 3
With a Snazaroo fine round brush start to build up the boney features of the face as follows: Draw a line over the temples as shown (below left) using a fine round brush loaded with Snazaroo Black. Then whilst the paint is still wet, drag and blend the line to create a shadow effect (below right) using a dry Snazaroo large flat brush

Step 4
Now outline the yellow forehead area as shown with Black paint using a fine round brush. Again create a shadow effect by using the drag and blend technique with a dry brush.

Step 5
Paint a thin Black spoon shape line under the cheek bones to create a hollow effect. Drag and blend the wet line using a dry large flat brush to create this effect

Add wrinkles around the face with a fine round brush loaded with Black paint - crows' feet are good. Shadow the inner aspect of the eye socket with black paint. Paint a tooth shape at the end of the nose to show the bone structure using a multi purpose brush.

Step 6
Now hollow the eyes out using a sponge loaded with Black paint. Make sure the sponge is barely damp then use a dry large flat brush to blend in a little with the surrounding White. Hollow the mouth by painting egg shaped areas using a large flat brush on each side of the mouth. They should meet the spoon shape (painted in step 5) as shown.

Step 7
Use a fine round brush loaded with Snazaroo Black to paint in the teeth to complete the look.

For a small gathering of children, two or three small to medium sized paint brushes will be sufficient. A bowl of water to rinse the brushes and a roll of paper towels conclude the list of basic supplies.

In my opinion, the simplest design to paint is that of a ghost. The basic shape of the ghost is that of a triangle. With a brush loaded with white paint, paint a loose triangle by creating a wavy line to outline the ghost. Fill in with more white paint, dot on black eyes and a smile and the ghost is complete.

Nothing is "sweeter" than a face dotted with painted candy corn. The basic shape is a pyramid, with yellow on the bottom third, orange on the middle third and white at the peak. You can create a candy corn crown by painting the candies in succession along the forehead.

To paint a jack-o-lantern, begin with a circle or oval of orange paint. When the orange paint dries, add small triangles in black paint for the eyes and nose and paint a toothy smile in black as well. Add a green stem and your jack-o-lantern is complete.

The most important thing to remember when face painting is to have fun and keep it simple! Children aren't expecting a Picasso to be painted on their face. They simply love to celebrate the occasion and face painting is the perfect way to light up the face of any child.

- Consider your skin tone. The more closely your skin coloring matches the cat face, the less makeup you need to use to perfect the look. If you have a darker skin tone, consider a black cat face; if your skin tone is fair, you could opt for a tabby cat face instead.

- Decide if you want to use face paint or makeup to create the cat face. Many people are allergic to face paint, so test the paint before you put it on. People with allergies can use regular eye shadows and eyeliners to create cat eyes without face paint.

- Look at cat references like calendars, drawings or books. Try to find references that show a side view or profile of the cat face and not just the front. This can help you paint the cat's eyes and nose better.

- Pick a cat face within your skill level. If you're new to face painting, you don't want to pick a cat face that requires precise blending and shading to achieve the look.

- Know how long you need to paint your face. You might paint some cat faces in a few minutes where others could take you an hour or longer. If you need to get ready in a hurry, pick an easy cat face.

- Enhance your face with accessories like colored contacts. Many specialty stores offer prescription contacts with cat pupils. You can also add a headband with ears or real whiskers instead of drawn ones.
